A return trip to Tasmania for regenerative village development

August 07, 20251 min read

During the PhD research in 2016 I traveled to Tasmania to visit Tasman Ecovillage, Cascade cohousing, Cohousing Cooperative and Rocky Cape Christian Community and interview residents of their community experiences.

Now 9 years later, a PhD complete, years of village living experiences and a clear path for working with others to co-create more villages I am again returning to Tasmania.

Tomorrow I am returning to Tasmania for one month yet this time my focus is upon on a group project to build tiny houses where I'll be wearing a nail-bag again, using the shovel and getting my hands in the soil improving a veggie patch and sharing good times with others in the process. It is a well deserved retreat from computer time and an opportunity to breathe Tassie air and meet with people keen for village living.

I've also been invited to give public presentations about regenerative village development in Hobart and local groups in Cygnet. I'll share about how this goes in subsequent blogs.

My heart, mind and soul are quietly excited to be traveling, working with others and engaging in group discussions that lead to practical village development rather than preparing proposals for submission to the housing industry.

It seems that grass roots is able to build momentum for practical solutions locally while the big machinations of the industry develop policy. Both are needed.

Rather than stay in hotels or paid accommodation that an academic would often be used, I been offered, and really appreciative of, a tiny house on wheels for the month on the property. It is a gift to be close to the land.
